A few people have asked me lately what actually goes into a Sydney George handbag, so I thought I would write it down properly rather than explain it one message at a time.
Every one of our handbags starts with high quality calf skin leather. I wanted a leather that would hold its shape, feel soft against your hand, and only get better looking with age, not something that creases and cracks after a season. We have partnered with a manufacturer who sources this leather and holds themselves to ethical and environmentally responsible standards, which matters to me both as a business owner and as someone who wants to leave a better footprint for my own kids.
From there, every bag is finished with our signature details: gold hardware, a secure magnetic closure, and our gold Sydney George nameplate with embroidery framing the face of the bag. Inside, there is a cardholder and a luxe velvet lining, because I think the inside of a bag deserves the same attention as the outside. Most of our styles also come with a drop handle and a detachable, adjustable long strap, so the one bag can move between a special occasion and an ordinary day without missing a beat.
None of this is accidental. I wanted to design leather handbags in New Zealand that people actually reach for again and again, not pieces that sit in a cupboard after one outing. That is the whole idea behind Sydney George: quality materials, considered details, and a bag that earns its place in your everyday life the same way a well designed room earns its place in a home.
If you have questions about any of our styles, materials or care, I would love to hear from you. This is still a young business and I am learning and improving as we go, but the standards I hold for our handbags are not going to change.
